Summary
Stanley has recalled 2.6 million stainless steel travel mugs due to faulty lids that can detach, causing burns.
The recall affects Switchback and Trigger Action mugs sold in the U.S. between 2016 and 2024 at retailers like Amazon, Walmart, and Target.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission reported 91 incidents globally, including 38 burn injuries, with 11 requiring medical attention.
Customers are urged to contact Stanley for replacement lids. The popular mugs, priced between $20 and $50, remain a staple for many despite safety concerns.
Unreal how these mediocre mugs took off due to an online trend (that, let’s be real here, probably started its life as guerilla marketing). TikTok is such a shithole. Sort of like using a bidet which costs more upfront to to cut down on toilet paper and have a better experience, it’s fantastic to use reusable mugs which cost more upfront to cut down on water bottles and have a better experience.
If this hype had been around water bottles in general, that would’ve been fantastic; adequate hydration and microplastics are two critical public health issues. But Stanleys are mid as fuck, and the fact people were buying them en masse as a Beanie Baby-tier fashion accessory likely made them more difficult to obtain for the people who actually wanted to use them. And for all the hype, you’re getting something that’s generally shittier than an equivalently priced HydroFlask or Yeti.
