But the marketplace! But my friend from highschool I haven’t spoken to or even sent a message in decades! Keep clinging to those excuses to hang around.

If there’s any good that comes of this blatant corruption, I hope it’s Trump leaving open source ML alone instead of giving into whatever monopoly Altman is pushing.
There’s basically a fediverse vs Facebook war going on within AI land, and the tremendous irony is that Zuck is a huge open weights proponent.
Because THATS the most important thing right now
No, but it’s not unimportant.
As dystopian as it is, we are stuck with AI, and there are two futures:
Stagnant, earth burning, censored corporate APIs.
Open weight, power efficient, extensively community modified, locally or “swarm” run models.
And it really is urgent, because the later has a great fighting shot now, but funding/regulation dries up for it, it will never catch up again. Altman an the “AI bros” know this which is why they are pushing the AI danger angle so hard… so you can only by it from them.
You don’t have to use AI. It’s only being crammed into proprietary software. You can steer clear of it with FOSS operating systems.
It’s simply a silver lining.
Frankly, I’m fine with Zuckerberg reading the room and doing what’s needed. It shouldn’t be what’s needed, there’s going to be huge blatant corruption under Trump. It’s terrible that America has put itself in this situation. But America has put itself into this situation, here we are.
So if someone lobbying for something that’s good has to suck up to Trump to get it done, that’s unfortunate but at least something good gets done. The proper fix is to get Trump back out of power again and put a more reasonable government in its place. That won’t be for a while, though, and it will require the DNC to read the room to accomplish it.
No he isn’t. It’s a position he holds for the moment to harm competitors. It allows him to take the work of others for his own profit.
The moment his engineers create a competitive improvement, it will be proprietary.
That’s, unfortunately, the position of everyone “big” in the open weights ecosystem now, just in different flavors.
If Meta creates a solid foundation of open AI to get to that point then I will give him credit for that, though. Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Meta’s doing the right thing right now, if you reject that because eventually Meta will do something that isn’t then you’ll get nothing at all.
