  • Wikipedia makes hundreds of millions of dollars a year to run a site that is mostly text. Text put there by unpaid volunteers. Unpaid volunteers that repeatedly request the site stop asking for donations like they’re broke. The executive salaries of the Wikimedia Foundation total $88 million a year.

However, there has been some controversy over the administration of the funds. While the Tides Foundation has promised to become a more transparent 501©(3) organization to reveal how it manages funds, details on expenses and salaries are still lacking seven years later. Additionally, the WMF’s salary costs have risen from $7 million in 2010/11 to $88 million in 2021/22.

  • From the Tribunal’s decision. It was ruled that voting against displaying a pride flag is not necessarily discriminatory. The mayor, however, stated his reason for denying the request was because there isn’t a straight flag. It was ruled his decision was based on sexuality, and therefore, discriminatory. The other councilors who voted against the resolution were fine.

[51] However, Mayor McQuaker’s remark during the May 12 council meeting that there was no flag for the “other side of the coin … for straight people” was on its face dismissive of Borderland Pride’s flag request and demonstrated a lack of understanding of the importance to Borderland Pride and other members of the LGBTQ2 community of the Pride flag. I find this remark was demeaning and disparaging of the LGBTQ2 community of which Borderland Pride is a member and therefore constituted discrimination under the Code

  • It might not be the engine. Some companies just don’t care much about optimization when they can just tell their players to buy better hardware.

Take GTA5 for example. It had a notoriously long load screen when starting up. Ranging from 2 minutes to 10 minutes depending on the read speeds of your storage drive. A modder ended up finding the problem. The code to load up the items in the game opened and read a file, but there was a bug that caused it to read through the entire file for each item loaded. The file was being read thousand of times. The modder changed one line of code and the loading time was reduced significantly. This was a bug that plagued GTA5 for years, caused by a single line of code, that the company didn’t fix because their fix was to buy better hardware.
