  • I also actually do like Subway.

It’s it the best thing ever? No. But when I have the choice between McDonald’s, some bread bun with maybe a single slice of salad and subway, the choice is very clear. All their options come with good amounts of veggies, they had decent vegetarian options quite early, their cookies rock and they were one of the few offering free refills.

I dunno what the snobbism is always about. I love it when I need to wait for a train and Subway is an option.

  • It should be noted that the case for “take the antibiotics until the very end of your prescription” isn’t as strong as it was some years ago.

The assumption was that if you don’t take them until the end, strains immune to the antibiotics would survive, making them less effective in the long run. But the problem with this way of thinking is that the bacteria that gains immunity will survive it anyways – in fact a longer exposure to antibiotics rewards the trait of immunity, as evolutionary pressure is higher. There are fewer strains to compete against, as these have been killed by the antibiotics, making the unwanted mutations more likely.

Antibiotics resistance mostly comes from long time exposure to them. At least that’s my understanding, not an expert in the field.

Edit: since I got downvoted: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6370607/

The risk of antibiotic-related adverse events, including resistance, increases with longer treatment courses

When antibiotics are indicated for treatment, short courses are as effective as standard ones for most common infections

    But why a reinstall?

Tethering should work in your installation, as the installer uses an LTS kernel just like the installed system. Use it, edit config to use latest Linux, nixos-rebuild boot, reboot.

Won’t fix Ethernet obviously but I don’t see the need for reinstallation

  • Touch-and-go

It was about 7 years ago and I don’t remember the hyphenation exactly, I just spotted the use of “goes” and suspected it to be… non-ideal. Not sure “Situations” would have been too helpful; considering the context, in retrospective I think “Events” might have been better as you were supposed to enter the number of times it occurred… and I’d argue a situation can include multiple events (or occurrences?).

This was during development of a system used in aviation that needed these numbers to calculate maintenance intervals. So not exactly something most people get in contact with.

For clarification, this is when the aircraft already has wheels on the runway during landing (touch) and the pilot decides he won’t be able to make a stop until the end of the runway safely and takes off again (go)

  • In the same way words like “antique” and “vintage” bring about specific time periods and aesthetics, “retro” does as well.

In my opinion, “retro” gaming is a misnomer and “vintage” is more fitting for what people usually mean. Retro is something modern or recent made in an older style. Actual old stuff is “vintage”. So a game like UFO 50 is actual retro gaming; of course the definition gets more fuzzy when you look at ROM hacks that don’t even work on the original hardware of the base ROM. But if you buy an original old console and play the games from back then, that’s not really retro by the original definition.

However, I’m well aware that this ship has sailed

  • This is always weird with pluralization of words ending in a long O, I remember a similar discussion how to do it for “Touch and Go”.

“Touch and Gos” makes the O short, “Touch and Goes” is also wrong - I think we settled on "Touch and Go"s (I’m not a native speaker but we had one on the group) - I guess the authors here had a similar issue here and decided for this. Also this might be interpreted like in “we’re eating at McDonald’s” this is speculation

  • It’s a bit of a problem that there’s no serious contender to NixOS. Especially Guix is in a good position to become an alternative.

But it will never happen, because of GNU. And before I continue, I want to make clear that this is not to shit on them.

But realistically, only a fork could make it relevant. NixOS, despite its issues (documentation, flakes, whatever), has a massive mindshare: it’s a huge repository with very up-to-date packages, a lot of modules, and devshells are just a very handy thing for developers. You often find flakes in random GitHub repositories for that reason. There are sponsored efforts around the distribution (like lanzaboote). There are (semi-)commercial entities set up around it (numtide, determinate systems, tweag…)

The difference between NixOS and Guix is probably so large that no commercial provider would want to put in the required work to bring Guix up to speed, and GNU is committed to other values. As such, I think only a very big volunteer effort could make a difference.

  • NixOS is probably the or one of the distributions where you need docker the least.

That’s not to say you shouldn’t use it, but it makes less sense to me than on other systems, and you lose out on some of the good stuff from what I understand (no module system configuration for imported docker containers for example? I have never tried this).

You can already manage your dependencies very accurately with Nix, no need to ship them all in a container; and if you use containers for isolation, there are stronger mechanisms available, e.g. MicroVM.nix.
