  • The worst are things like:

    1. Bot 1 - I went from broke to making $30k/month once I found this amazing financial advisor.
    2. Bot 2 - what financial advisor did you use?
    3. Bot 3 - I used X, Google their name.
    4. Bot 4 - Oh yeah, X is great, I’ve used them for years!
    5. Bot 2 - I just talked to X, they’re wonderful.

And so on. They upvote each others’ comments, and since down votes don’t show up anymore, they seem popular.

There’s all kinds of crap like that, and they’re really obvious and probably trivial for AI to detect.

  • Or the way I do it:

    • 3 * 20 = 60
    • 60 - 51 = 9
    • 20 - (9 / 3) = 17

So the factors are 17 and 3. I know 3 is a factor because 5+1=6, which is divisible by 3, so I just use a convenient multiple of 3 that’s pretty close to the actual number to get the divisor.

I have young kids and they keep asking me to do crazy math problems while driving, so that’s generally the trick I use.

  • Eh, I’m not so sure about the useful vs harmful tradeoff, but it’s certainly not harming anything AFAICT. In fact, they’ll be super motivated to get cheap, reliable electricity as it grows, so expect more investments like reopening 3-mile island, solar energy storage, etc. It could end up being a net win climate-wise (probably not), but in any case, it’s not what’s causing climate change.

If we want to address climate change, we need to address the 500lb gorillas in the room: transportation. Anything else, IMO, is a distraction.

  • Yup. We have a librarian here that’s trans, and the only reason I know is because I have eyes (and they transitioned after getting the job). Oh, and we’re in a pretty conservative area, and I’ve never heard or seen anyone having any issues with her, though I’m sure it happens.

Oh, and that librarian rocks. We couldn’t find one of our holds, and it turned out it was stuck in their book elevator thing which had broken down that day, and they went out of their way to fish our books out for us. It’s completely unrelated to her gender identity, I just thought that was really cool.

  • That said, data centers as a whole are something like 1% of the global electricity use. So while AI may use a lot of energy relative to what you’re getting, it’s really not a ton in the grand scheme of things.

If the goal is to reduce electricity usage, there are bigger fish to fry. If the goal is to stop the small fish from getting too large w/o providing value, then go ahead, guilt away.

  • Eh, you can do off-site backups a bit cheaper than that, just bring a drive in to work and leave it in your desk. Boom, off-site backups for the cost of a drive. No need to alternate anything, just bring the drive home every few months to re-sync. Or keep that drive at a relative’s/friend’s house if work doesn’t work for whatever reason.

I’m currently using a RAID mirror only, but I’m planning on doing the “bring your drive to work day” thing, and I think it can work really well. The drive should last something like 5 years (or more!), especially if you’re only spinning it up a few times/year.

  • obviously not in their right min

That really depends on context. If the person was otherwise behaving normally and had a reasonable explanation for how they’re dressed (i.e. they’re coming back from comicon or something), I don’t see why not, as long as the background checks out.

Then again, if they come in filming the place and whatnot, then yeah, I wouldn’t touch that with a 10’ pole. That’s a lot more sus than some makeup.
