There is a mod for the DSi/3DS called “Twilight Menu” and it allows DS games to use the DSi’s better clock speeds. Given that overclocking is a common feature for emulators, I was wondering if there were any DS emulators with this feature. I have seen discussions on other websites about this topic and how it would be possible but none of the emulators are listed as having an overclocking feature. All of the documentation and discussions about this seem to be at least a few years old and I know a lot can happen in a few years.
I am reasonably certain DeSmuME allows you to, or perhaps even automatically enables the higher clock speeds you are looking for. On which host platforms this may be the case other than desktop, I do not know. YMMV.
If DeSmuME is the only emulator that does this, I’ll have to try it again later. I’m not seeing an option for it and I’m unable to tell if it does it automatically because the emulator is lagging on every device I own.
What devices are you trying to run it on our of interest?
Are you tunning the emulator directly or running it through something like retroarch?
I’ve noticed RA has some settings missing on certain emulators, and lower end or older hardware can see a performance drop in comparison between the two options.
Apologies that I can’t provide a more direct and useful answer.
The two main devices I’m trying it on are, a Dell Latitude E7470 and a Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 FE. On my computer, I’m running the native Linux version from Flathub. On my tablet, I am running the retroarch version because I don’t think there is a native android version available (at least officially).
After some quick testing in RA you will want to use the MelonDS core, specifically titled (MelonDS DS), as opposed to (MelonDS), or (NooDS), both explicitly have a DSi emulation mode in the core options, accessible after loading a rom. My apologies, either I misremembered desmume having the feature or it’s been removed/hidden.
I looked for that core earlier and couldn’t find it, does that core have to downloaded separately? The only cores that appear for me are the MelonDS and DeSmuME cores.
That’s odd. Have you run the update core info files, assets, database, etc in the online update of RA? Are you running latest stable RA(1.19.1)?
I just updated the core info files but it’s still not listed. I’m using both of the versions available on the Google Play Store and they both say that they are version 1.9.12.
Y?
I’m not sure why you would be confused by my post but I’m basically looking for an emulator that can mimic what it’s like to run DS games through Twilight Menu. The DSi’s main CPU was about twice as fast and given that the DS didn’t have a GPU, that means a lot of the games that aren’t DSi enhanced can perform significantly better on a DSi. I think the most well know example I can give is Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars, as it constantly has performance issue during normal gameplay.
To be more specific. Why do you want to do that in particular? Not being an asshole. I just want to know why
Because when I play games, I like to be able to get the best possible experience. For DS games, it’s having them run using the better hardware that the DSi has. I also do something similar for PSP games, where I have PPSSPP’s emulated CPU running at 333 MHz because you can mod PSPs to allow all games to use that clock speed instead of just the games that supported that clock speed.
