  • You can do ironed cheese sandwiches,* so they get plenty hot, but most modern irons will turn themselves off if they’re not moving for more than a minute.

*Assemble the sandwich on top of a generous piece of aluminum foil, heavy duty if you have it: butter on the outside, cheese on the inside, sourdough with cheddar is excellent but white bread with American is what the kids expect. (Don’t get too creative with additions until you have a good sense of how long to melt the middle without burning the outside.) Bring up two foil edges and fold that seam at least twice, making it flat as possible against the sandwich and able to channel any escaping butter towards the ends rather than just seeping down onto the ironing board. Then fold the ends as well. Maybe you better put a second piece of foil on your ironing board just in case. Put the iron on top heat but turn off the steam. Iron the sandwich on both sides, starting with the seam side and then doing the bottom, until it smells toasty and delicious. Only move the iron enough to hit all the corners and also keep it from turning off, and don’t press hard.

  • Do puberty blockers result in sterilization? Top surgery certainly doesn’t. Gender affirming bottom surgery is often postponed until 18 in any case. And there are also nonsurgical options for preventing menstruation in the meantime, even if the person can’t take puberty blockers.

None of which makes this provision anything other than cruel bigotry. In fact, don’t tell them, or they’ll take out that phrase to make the ban more sweeping. But I feel like, while they were adding the last-minute provision, someone sneaked in the sterilization bit like a little fairy godmother making the curse a little less dire.

Because let’s say you’re the only person who showed up to work today. Trying to fill prescriptions puts your back to the rest of the store, maybe even takes you behind shelves. Makes it easy for you to get held up. Also shoplifting but I’m more concerned about your safety. With the drive through, you can give desperate sick people their prescriptions, and people who want other stuff can get it elsewhere.

  • I imagine you mean they won’t, and you may be right. But too many people don’t even start trying to fight denials, which is why insurance companies do it. Often it doesn’t take a huge pushback to get them to change, especially if it would expose their corrupt practices. Of course, sometimes they are obdurate, and United Healthcare is one of the worst.

As for the ACA, it’s still true, at least until Trump takes office.
